Lori’s first visit to Honduras was in 1999 soon after Hurricane Mitch ravished the capitol city and surrounding areas. She came as part of a Torch mission team who came to provide housing, food and medical care. Lori was impacted deeply by the poverty and daily struggle she saw, and was drawn to the women and children and their daily struggle to survive. It was then that a passion for justice and empowerment for women in the developing world began. Lori and her husband Mark moved to Honduras in 2008 to work among the people full time.
In 2002 Lori Connell and Janet Hines founded Mi Esperanza. Lori serves as the executive Director/Honduras and the President of the Honduras Board of Directors. Lori is involved in the growth and development of every aspect of the Mi Esperanza program. Overseeing the day to day running of the program which includes the training facility, micro-credit program and the sewing maquilla is her primary responsibilities. Lori’s desire to improve the lives of women living in extreme poverty is her passion, knowing it will change the lives of the children as well. Lori has 2 children, Ryan Connell Hernandez and Eric Connell. Both of her children are married and Lori has 3 grandchildren, Will, Maya and Kate. Lori’s children and their spouses are involved in the work among the poor in Honduras.
Lori’s vision for the future is to grow Mi Esperanza and bring the HOPE of the program to other areas of Honduras and Latin America.
