Sewing School
Joel Steidl
Mi Esperanza currently has 2 sewing schools and our classes are free to the women who enroll. One class is at our city center and one is a satellite class that moves from community to community, studying approx. 18 months to 3 years. Our satellite course serves the many women who can not leave their communities for a variety of reasons and provides an educational opportunity close to home.
Our sewing school offers 3 levels of skill training and the women are free to decide how many levels they would like to complete. Depending on the number of levels they choose they are with us between 18 months to 3 years. They learn to operate manual and electric machines as well as sergers. The women learn pattern making, and all varieties of clothing including uniforms which is a huge benefit to all families.
The women who graduate from our program do a variety of things from sewing in their homes, working in maquilas, working in tailor shops, and some work for Mi Esperanza. Our graduates have the opportunity to apply to our micro-loan program to start their own business.
The cost to fund a sewing student is $500.00. You can make a donation specific to this program in the donate area of this website.
